A rally through the years of New York Times’ gender reporting in tennis.
Conversation around the gender gap in professional sports hit a fever pitch leading up to the 2019 U.S. Open. The New York Times has led the way in gender reporting in all sports. This film, made for the US Open Finals, tells the story of the long fight for equal pay in tennis. It shows how since 1953, the Times’ journalism has given a voice to female athletes in their long fight for equality.
We used decades of Times reporting to reveal the long fight of female players. With an iconic women’s tennis rally as our narrative device, every fault matched a headline of a setback, every point, a breakthrough. Billie Jean King’s wooden hits evolved to Venus William’s metallic smashes, mirroring their outspoken voices through the years.
It’s a fight we wanted the viewers to feel, not just read about.
